Google LLC is targeting older computing workloads by partnering with IBM Corp. to launch IBM Power Systems on its cloud infrastructure.

The move, officially announced today, gives businesses an onramp for existing legacy infrastructure and workloads that can’t easily be replaced or moved to the cloud. Many of those workloads run on IBM’s Power Systems, and up until now IBM was the only company that offered access to that hardware via the cloud.

“Enterprises looking to the cloud to modernize their existing infrastructure and streamline their business processes have many options,” wrote Kevin Ichhpurani, corporate vice president of Global Ecosystem at Google Cloud, in a blog post. “At one end of the spectrum, some organizations are re-platforming entire legacy systems to adopt the cloud. Many others, however, want to continue leveraging their existing infrastructure while still benefiting from the cloud’s flexible consumption model, scalability, and new advancements in areas like artificial intelligence, machine learning, and analytics.”

IBM’s Power Systems are used by many companies to power mission-critical workloads based on Oracle Corp. and SAP SE applications and databases. By supporting Power Systems on its cloud, Google is giving those companies the option to take their older workloads and migrate them to the cloud without needing to re-engineer their applications or infrastructure. Companies can also benefit from closer integration with Google’s cloud services.

It isn’t immediately clear why IBM would want to help Google considering that the two companies rival each other in the cloud, though clearly it could benefit from the deal with increased hardware sales.

Google said IBM Power Systems is available on its cloud platform starting today, but it hasn’t published any prices.

This article focuses on the “under the hood” machine learning (ML) work IBM announced last week at Think 2018, work that will soon accelerate Watson and PowerAI training performance even further. This coincidentally highlights IBM’s partnership with NVIDIA and access to NVIDIA’s NVLink interconnect technology for GPUs.

Last year, I discussed an IBM paper that described how to train a ML image classification model in under an hour at 95% scaling efficiency and 75% accuracy, using the same data sets that Facebook used for training. IBM ran that training benchmark in the first half of 2017 using the 64 POWER8-based Power System S822LC for High Performance Computing systems. Each of those systems had four NVIDIA Tesla P100 SXM2-connected GPUs and used IBM’s PowerAI software platform with Distributed Deep Learning (DDL).

IBM’s new paper, “Snap Machine Learning,” describes a new IBM machine learning (ML) library that more effectively uses available network, memory and heterogeneous compute resources for ML training tasks. It is also based on a new platform—IBM Power Systems AC922 server. IBM’s AC922 has four SXM2-connected NVIDIA Tesla V100 GPUs attached to dual-POWER9 processors via NVIDIA’s latest NVLINK 2.0 interface.

Cloud computing has been developing rapidly since the term was coined in 2006. It’s played an integral role in the transformation of many businesses over the last decade, particularly valued for the reliability, scalability and versatility that cloud technology brings compared to traditional dedicated servers. Research company IDC’s findings back this prediction up, by pointing out that a year ago traditional data centres accounted for 62 per cent of IT infrastructure spending, while public cloud captured 23 per cent and private cloud, 15 per cent.

Illustrating a rapid shift, IDG predicts that by 2020 data centres will represent 50 per cent of the market, with public cloud forming just under a third of the market and private cloud making up 20 per cent. In simple terms, data centres’ importance is diminishing, while public and private cloud technology’s value and usability is growing and gaining traction.

IBM’s transition from a dominant server hardware supplier to one focused on new-age software and services has been what you might expect from a 100-year old company: glacially slow and sometimes painful.

But lately the 100-year-old seems to have a bit more spring in its step.

Several years ago, IBM launched its Strategic Imperatives initiative, a mission to drive revenues in emerging markets, including cloud, analytics, mobile, social and security services, to hedge against rapidly falling sales of its legacy server hardware.

Over much of that time, IBM Strategic Imperatives revenues have grown double digits and now represent over 43% of IBM’s overall sales over the past 12 months. The company’s cloud revenues reached $15.1 billion over the past 12 months and as-a-service revenues from the Strategic Imperatives rose to $8.8 billion.

IBM’s transition to a more meaningful cloud strategy has been circuitous. The company had a somewhat aimless focus on cloud strategy until it purchased the Dallas-based SoftLayer Technologies, Inc. in 2013 for $2.5 billion. SoftLayer, then the largest privately held infrastructure provider, would hook its public cloud services with IBM’s SmartCloud offerings so users could more quickly and easily incorporate cloud computing.

It also provides users with the ability to save money when operating data centers and use their applications outside of the office. One clear benefit of hybrid cloud computing is having a private infrastructure that’s directly accessible and that is not pushed through the public internet. This greatly reduces the access time in comparison to the cloud services used by the general public.
Fog Computing

Fog computing, also known as edge computing, facilitates the operation of compute, storage, and networking services between end devices and cloud computing data centers. It is another way to gather and process data at local computing devices instead of in the cloud or at a remote data center. Fog computing uses sensors and other connected devices to send data to a nearby edge computing device. It is considered a gateway device, like a switch or a router, that is able to process and analyze the data. By using fog computing solutions, a business’s cybersecurity is enhanced through the reduction of the amount of data being sent into the cloud, thereby reducing the threat and attack surfaces of IoT networks.

A study done by Business Insider’s research team stated that 570 million devices in 2015 used fog computing. It is expected that by the year 2020 that number will raise to include up to 5.8 billion IoT devices. Many IoT devices don’t have their own computing powers. Fog computing provides a better way than cloud solutions do when it comes to collecting and processing data from these devices.
What’s the Difference?

Cloud computing solutions work as a group of computers and servers connected together using the internet to create a network. With the amount of data that is being produced daily, a large portion of it needs to be easier and quicker to access. This is where fog computing can come into play. Fog computing solutions manage certain application processes or services at the edge of the network by a smart device as opposed to traditionally managing these systems in the cloud. It can be considered as a middle layer between the cloud and the hardware used to enable more efficient data processing, analysis and storage. This is achieved by reducing the amount of data that needs to be transported to the cloud.

Making the switch between hybrid cloud computing and fog computing requires a high-speed network with the ability to accomplish real-time data transmission and program different devices. A programmable device allows the user to develop proprietary applications that are able to filter out unnecessary data. The smaller the data packets, the faster data can be transmitted. These smaller packets allow faster transmission to the analytics engines and able to send data using mesh networking technology proven to provide greater and stronger security.
Conclusion

In industries and businesses where even milliseconds are vital, certain processes and programs tend to move away from the Cloud towards fog computing. This shift can save money, time and space. The Cloud is secure, but is still known to be capable of security breaches. Understanding this vulnerability, industries have shifted from hosting all their data and analytic tools through the cloud to the process of fog computing and using sensors and devices that are already equipped with security.
